How to care for your bed linens

Congratulations on the purchase of your beautiful and exclusive bed linens and towels from Bea e Martina! To ensure that your product remains good as new and lasts a long time, here are a few helpful tips:

Bed Linen:

Washing

The more you wash it the better pure linen will become. When cared for correctly, high quality italian linen will last many years. It is advised that you launder fine linen at least once a week on a warm wash setting using a gentle laundering detergent. The fastest way to wear out your bed linen is by neglecting to wash it on a regular basis. Natural oil and moisture from the skin is absorbed into the fabric and will degrade it over time. Laundering your linens at home is preferable as compared to sending to Laundry Companies. Wash your linens separately and separate the light and dark colours. Always rinse linen well at the end of the wash cycle.

Detergent

Using a gentle laundering detergent will help to preserve your linen. Keep your whites white by using a detergent with brightening agents, such as a product like Napisan. When adding detergent we recommend being conservative on the amount used per wash.

Drying

The biggest advantage of linen is its durabilty and they way it softens over time the more it's washed. Always check care instructions on the product label before laundering. Line drying linens is preferable, however, if you prefer the feeling of tumble dried sheets, it is best to line dry them to 90% then finish them off in the dryer. Pure linen will feel softer when tumble dried. If the sheets are removed from the tumble dryer and laid flat or folded while still warm they may not require ironing. It is important to use a low to medium heat being careful not to over dry the fibres, over time this will cause the yarns to become brittle.

Shrinkage

Our products have a standard allowance for shrinkage. We only use the highest quality fabrics made from natural fibres, sourced mostly from Europe. All our fabrics are tested and manufactured to allow for shrinkage in the first wash and tumble dry. Shrinkage, in some cases can be as much as 15% and the product may initially seem to be the wrong size. However a 60 degree medium wash and a warm tumble dry (where applicable) will shrink the product to the correct size and fit. Although the majority of shrinkage happens in the first wash, it can take up to three washes for products to fully shrink.

Ironing

A good quality steam iron makes ironing cotton bed linen much easier. Iron cottons on a warm-hot setting, but always check the care label first for the ironing recommendation. We recommend to iron bed linen when it is damp either from washing, or after spraying with water from a spray bottle (like our fragrant linen ironing water).

Avoid using harsh starches when you iron as this will coat the surface of your cotton and affect the true beauty and softness of the fabric. Spritzing bed linen with scented linen water assists in removing heavy set creases and also adds a freshness for a calming sleeping experience.

How to care for pillows and duvets

Our Brinkhauss collection of duvets and pillows are amongst the finest in the world. To take proper care of your pillows and duvets, we recommend the following care tips:

Pillows

Airing

Once a month we recommend that you remove your down pillow from the pillow case and place it outside in the fresh air. Gently move the filling around and ruffle the down or feather clusters from any lumpy spots. For best results we recommend air your pillow out for 12-24 hours on the clothes line.

Dry Cleaning

We advise having all of our goose down pillows professionally dry cleaned, to preserve the down, and ensure that it is washed suitably. Cleaning your pillow will remove the impurities that are trapped in the filling, and you will find that after it is cleaned, much of your pillow’s original spring and loft will return.

Down Duvets

Airing

It is important to maintain a down quilt in order to prolong its life. The first thing to remember is to fluff or shake your down quilt regularly to expand the down clusters with air and renew their loft. Airing the quilt is also an important part of down care. We recommend removing your down quilt from the quilt cover and airing it outside for a few hours twice a year. This will maintain its freshness. A handy time to do this is when you are washing or changing your quilt covers. To achieve the best results air in warm weather with a slight breeze. In addition, exposure to sunlight will help eradicate any mildew spores or dust mites. In the off-season, always store your down quilt in a breathable bag in a well-ventilated area. Lastly, where ever possible, it is recommended to avoid sitting or lying on the down, since this will only crush the delicate down filaments. Over time this will cause the down quilt to flatten and lose warmth.

Dry Cleaning

we advise having all of our goose down quilts professionally dry cleaned, to preserve the down, and ensure that it is washed suitably. Cleaning your quilt will remove the impurities that are trapped in the filling, and you will find that after it is cleaned, much of your quilt’s original spring and loft will return.

Be sure to check that the dry cleaner launders and cleans your quilt only. We are cautious of companies who claim to “rejuvenate” your quilt, as we have seen cases where they top up your quilt with inferior duck down and/or feather.

Enjoy your luxurious down duvets and pillows!

Brinkhaus Duvets – Why Silk Is Best

Brinkhaus Duvets – Why Silk Is Best

Silk Duvets are Perfect All Year Round

Silk is a completely different type of material to traditional duvet fillings and thus is not measured by the traditional tog system.  Down duvets cover the body with sheer bulk - the more bulk the higher the tog value.  Silk duvets are thinner than down by nature allowing the duvet to drape over the body.  Down duvets form a physical barrier between your body and your surroundings, meaning the heat you give off reflects directly back at you.  This process continues throughout the night resulting in overheating.

Silk duvets are designed to allow air to flow more freely and thus regulate your body's heat. The result is your body stays cool in summer and warm in winter.  Silk duvets keep you comfortable over a wider range of temperatures, unlike down or polyester.

Significant Health and Comfort Advantages of Silk Duvets

  • Silk, being a natural product is breathable and so enables your body to maintain a more stable temperature.  This combined with some innovative duvet manufacturing techniques results in a duvet that can change the way you sleep.
  • Heat regulating. During the manufacturing process layer upon layer of long fibre mulberry silk floss is placed one on top of the other. This process is repeated until the desired weight is achieved. Layering the silk creates an intricate grid design, which is key to the heat regulating function of the duvet.  Because the silk floss has been layered and not stuffed into the duvet covering, the silk can let some heat escape through the grid design.  This results in a more pleasant sleep because our body temperature is kept at a more constant temperature throughout the night.
  • Hypoallergenic. Silk has some amazing hypoallergenic properties. Silk is a natural protein and therefore is far less hospitable to dust mites which can trigger allergic reactions such as asthma, eczema and rhinitis. Up to 20,000 dust mites have been known to live in a single mattress. The use of silk bedding and silk filled duvets greatly reduces the amount of dust mites in the bedroom.
  • Luxurious comfort. The nature of long-strand silk fibres mean a silk duvet is just as warm but much lighter than traditional duvets, and drapes over your body instead of "suffocating" you with the bulk of a conventional duvet.
